Circa 1960
Rare and highly unusual bespoke made matching pair of genuine Mouseman items. I’m grateful to Simon Thompson Cartwright at R. Thompson’s Craftsmen Ltd, who kindly authenticated the items with me recently, advising that they were probably part of a bespoke
school or ecclesiastical commission when originally made. Still highly useable today as kneelers, footstools, children’s stools or just as attractive decorative pieces within the home.
Wonderful quality jointed construction with a carved mouse running up each front left side and retaining their original dunlopillo padded, tan coloured analine leather tops which have been neatly folded over the edges and tacked to the underside. All
the joints are sound with no movement. The well figured wood has been cleaned and waxed, is free from any staining and presents with a lovely aged deep honey colour. The leather has some wear and tear commensurate with its age but remains eminently usable.
The top sections are generally good with some expected staining and creasing, any tearing being found in the corners, which is worse on one of the pieces. Please see the gallery images for full details. The leather could be easily replaced but
personally I think that the character and value of the pieces is enhanced by retaining the original leather, which has been sympathetically cleaned and conditioned. Regular conditioning once or twice a year should ensure the leather remains supple and
useable for many more years.
Size: 36.5(w) x 20.3(d) x 15.5(h) cm each.
