Circa 1980
A wonderful Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson solid oak writing and storage bureau. Features an adzed top and fall front with cleated ends which opens and sits on twin pull out lopers, each carved with excellent signature mice. Panelled and pinned sides and back. Inside reveals a writing surface and various pigeon holes for storage. Below are two short and two long graduated drawers with wooden drawer knobs. The whole piece stands on four octagonally carved feet. The top, fall front and drawers features superb quality quarter sawn oak which has been carefully selected by the Thompson’s craftsman making the piece specifically for the characterful medullary ray graining only found on quarter sawn oak.
Wonderful condition and patina, medium fumed with a cleaned, re-applied and polished clear wax finish. Very minor usage indents to the writing surface on the inside of the desk and slight staining to compartments on the right, all shown in the image gallery below. It retains its original lock, however, the centre pin is loose and the original key is no longer present. We’ve bought a replacement lock and key but have found the modern replacement lock is not a perfect fit to allow a simple swap, the lock pin position not matching exactly the original keyhole and escutcheon. As such we believe it is better to ‘leave well alone’ and accept that the fall front no longer locks. We are happy to include the new lock/key set if a buyer wishes to have it and wishes to make the necessary alterations.
To purchase new today these pieces cost £ 8,400 so we believe it is great value at the price below.
