Circa 1930s
A rare early and possibly uniquely designed Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson solid oak mantel clock. Carved and tooled from a solid block of english oak with a circular face and curving pierced sides, on a carved shaped base. A trademark mouse is carved prominently in high relief to one upper side. Made to be fitted with a 1920s period early Smiths car clock with underside adjusting knob, a restored and working example of which has been re-instated into it.
Dark fumed from new it presents in excellent condition and rich brown / chocolate colour with just very minor nicks from over 90 years of family usage.
Excellent provenance: made by George Cave(1893-1969), one of Roberts earliest craftsmen and retained within his descendant family until 2022 when sold by Tennants auctioneers without any clock movement. Subsequently subjected to a full restoration to working order with support and advice received from Robert Thompson’s Craftsmen Ltd. We’ve known the owners for many years and they have now entrusted us, as specialists in Mouseman and the Yorkshire craftsmen’s work, to find a new owner who will appreciate it into the future.
