A wonderful example of Gordon Russell’s early Arts and Crafts influenced design with excellent provenance, made in 1924 as part of a bespoke commission for Mr Harry S Fairhurst, F.R.I.B.A. of Cheshire, for his Anglesey home ‘Seagarth’ at Red Wharf Bay. A copy of the original invoice is enclosed as part of the sale, the item described on the invoice as an oak pedestal cupboard, M.11, costing £ 4-12-6d.

Square form in solid oak with a cedar cupboard back and base,  on four octagonally carved legs with a carved and chamfered X stretcher. Chamfered edges  and exposed dowel pinned joints. Lovely shaped oak cupboard door handle and brass hinge fittings. Very original with no significant staining and a lovely golden oak colour. All the joints are solid  with no evidence of any previous repairs, the only minor damage being  a natural wood split and slight chip losses visible in the top of the rear legs.

Being an important early commission for Gordon Russell the piece  is known to the Gordon Russell Museum.

Sir (Sydney) Gordon Russell (20/5/1892 – 7/10/1980). One of the leading designers and craftsmen of the 20th C. He came under the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement, which characterises his early work, from 1904 when his father moved to Broadway in the Cotsolds to be hotelier at the Lygon Arms. He later set up business locally as a furniture designer and maker after WW1 service. His reputation grew  and in 1947 he became director of the Council of Industrial Design, later known as the Design Council, he was knighted for services to design in 1955.
