Circa late 1940s / early 50s.

A rare and unusual bespoke early oak mantel clock made ‘out of hours’ by Mouseman craftsman David Miles Hoggarth for his own personal family use. It was common practice in Robert’s lifetime for craftsmen to make personal pieces carved with their own trademark mouse for their own family and friends use, and was undertaken with Robert Thompson’s knowledge and approval. In later years following Robert’s death this became more strictly controlled and eventually forbidden. Retained by his family until our acquisition recently directly from his step son, together with two photo frames (DS1495 / DS1496). Of octagonal glued and nailed segmented form, the outer clock cabinet  and feet made in oak, the clock face of contrasting burr veneer and oak strips. David’s signature mouse carving sits prominently on the top of the clock. Baize lined to the base. Still fitted with its original English early bakelite Metamec mains electric movement, introduced in 1947 and still working and keeping perfect time. It is running in silent mode but is missing the rear adjuster wheel that would allow it to be switched to a ticking mode. The dial and hands are typical late 40s / early 50s in style. We have replaced the plug / fuse and original wiring with  3 metres of brand new high quality UK made  two core double insulated wiring in a period braided finish. It would be possible to insert a modern battery operated quartz movement if a buyer preferred, following a little machining  that would be necessary to accomodate a locking nut underneath the dial face to secure the quartz movement in place.

It presents in wonderful waxed condition with a warm rich aged colour, and in full safe working order, a superb and unique piece for a mouseman collector.
