Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson Craftsman’s Rare Oak Photo Frame

Stock ref: DS1495

Circa early/mid 1950s

A rare and unusual bespoke oak photo frame made ‘out of hours’ by Mouseman craftsman David Miles Hoggarth for his own personal family use. It was common practice in Robert’s lifetime for craftsmen to make personal pieces carved with their own trademark mouse for their own family and friends use, and was undertaken with Robert Thompson’s knowledge and approval. In later years following Robert’s death this became more strictly controlled and eventually forbidden. Retained by his family until our acquisition recently directly from his step son, together with a mantel clock and another photo frame (DS1497 / DS1496).

Of portrait style orientation  the glued and pinned framework is subtly adzed all over with mitred corners and chamferred inner edges. Inset with a glass pane  with a fibreboard back and oak stand. We have replaced the old screws with new. David’s signature mouse is carved prominently running along the top of the phot frame. Complete with old newspaper padding between the glass and back with some very  interesting stories and adverts ! The pages are cut and folded so not complete, but  after some research in old FA Year Books  we have from the 1950s  we can confirm the football results  are for Saturday 25th February 1956, all of which helps to verify the age of the piece.

It presents in wonderful waxed condition with a warm rich aged colour, a superb and unique rare piece for a mouseman collector. It will easily hold a 6″ x 8″ photo.

Size: 18.5(w) x 9(d) x 25(h)cm.
