A superb bespoke commissioned Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson Oak Workbox, panelled all round, standing on four octagonally carved legs with a pull out baise lined drawer and lift-up lid with storage below. Darker fumed from new with feature hand carved detailing to the front panel. a fine early carved mouse is carved in high relief to the front right leg. Beautiful condition inside and out with a rich deep fumed brown toned colour, very minor surface scratching to the top surface as shown in the image gallery below.
Initialled EK and dated 1951, although there are a number of featues suggestive of a possibly earlier 1930s/40s manufacturing date. Provenanced to the estate of Elizabeth Kirk of Kilburn, the Kirk family being farmers and butchers in the village for generations, and friends and neighbours of Robert Thompson. This is one of a number of pieces acquired, we also puchased a number of pieces from her sister’s estate about a year ago. Both sisters are believed to have been presented with a number of bespoke made Mouseman pieces for their 21st birthdays by their parents.
