Circa 1926/27

A rare very early example of the Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson Oak Monk’s Chair, one of six bespoke commissioned for Bigadier Kenneth Hargeaves the soldier, industrialist and later in life variously the  High Sherrif and Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire.  His coat of arms in the rear splat and the banner ‘Industria’ is a reference to his status as a local industrialist. The  basic design of these very comfortable armchairs has changed very little over the years but this, the earliest design, is indicated by the grid-iron side splats and the position of the stretchers around the chair legs, instead of diagonally crossed, which was the norm by 1930.

Of particular note to collectors is that the chair is carved with two mouse signatures, each with the extremely rare front paws, which had  also stopped being carved this way by 1930.

Excellent condition and superb colour and patina.

The original set of 6 were split and sold individually in late 2018, although it is known that Robert Thompson’s bought two for their own museum and personal family use.
