Circa 1980s/90s
A superb bespoke made Yorkshire Oak Mantel Clock from the workshop of ex mouseman craftsman Malcolm Pipes, inset with a working 1920s /early 30s Smiths car clock with a hand wound mechanical movement. Malcolm made most of the Mouseman clocks, and they continued to be both a personal and commercial passion for him when he established his own Fox furniture business in Carleton Husthwaite, near Thirsk, right up until his retirement a few years ago. Some bear his trademark foxes mask, many of the clocks he made do not.
Beautifully carved from English Oak with carved flower heads and a yorkshire rose around the clock clock, distinctive adzed tooling to the top. It presents in the wonderfully rich, deep colour.
These vintage car clocks were produced by S Smith & Sons and were very poular aftermarket fitments in Austin, Morris, MG and other cars produced in the late 20s and early 30s. An example of this clock design is on display at the V&A Museum, London. The clock is protected and fitted into a cased bowl, hinged to the front and allowing opening to the winder, hand adjuster and fast / slow time regulator. The movement is a spring wound, lever escarpment, the dial is marked P 344099 together with the Smiths trademark. The inner bowl still retains the printed instructions for winding and time adjustment.
