Circa mid 1920s-50s
A superb solid oak Desk Lamp from the Windermere, Cumbria workshop of Stanley Webb Davies, the renowned Cotswold School trained Arts and Crafts furniture maker. Stanley Webb Davies pieces are rare to the market and increasingly highly sought after, representing understated Arts and Crafts furniture at its very best, in the Cotswold School style of Gimson, Romney Green and the Barnsley’s. Displaying the very finest cabinet making techniques and skills combined with meticulous attention to the smallest design and construction details.
This is a very rare opportunity to own a piece made by Stanley for his own personal use in his workshop office and his own home, Gatesbield, Windermere, and as such it is typically unsigned or dated.
Beautiful colour and in excellent working condition following a sympathetic clean and re-wax in our workshop and replacement of the old electrical fittings with a new earthed brass bulb holder, 3 core earthed period braided wiring and 3 amp fused plug, to ensure compliance with modern electrical safety standards. The original vitreous Crabtree on/off switch (as used in all homes as light switches in the 1920s-40s) has been cleaned and tested and is in working order. We’ve photographed the old wiring, 2 pin plug and bulb holder and these are available to the new owner if they wish to retain them.
Excellent provenance, from the Stanley Webb Davies Personal Collection 2019. This particular piece is from his own Gatesbield office/showroom and home. As with all his personal family possessions it was inherited by his niece and it is from her estate that this collection has come to market. It is complimented by examples of original letter headed paper and a showroom item tag used at his business which operated from 1923 -1960 in Windermere.
