Circa 1900

An excellent example of a Sir Ambrose Heal designed Arts and Crafts Oak Wardrobe for Heal and Son. 4’6″ wide, the detachable plain top with a castellated block cornice, quarter sawn panelled sides centered with a mirror door enclosing a hanging rail and hooks. A single drawer below, the whole piece complimented with wrought iron strap hinges, a latch to the door, the drawer with a heart shaped escutcheon and hoop handles. Original gilt oval metal label to the rear ‘Heal & Son 196 Tottenham Ct Road London’.

A wonderful piece in super condition and colour with extensive use of the finest quality quarter sawn oak which displays the unique medullary ray graining. The base drawer has been screwed retrospectively to the top section for added stability, but we will remove the screws  to aid transport of the piece, minor edge usage knocks and the lower edge of the door is catching very slightly.

Excellent provenance:  The Estate of Fiona MacCarthy (1940-2020), married to the Sheffield based designer David Mellor (1930-2009)

Fiona’s background as a journalist for House and Garden magazine and the Guardian lay the foundations for her extensive interest in the Arts and her seminal biographical works on William Morris, SR Ashbee, Eric Gill and Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus. She also curated many exhibitions most noatably ‘ Homespun to High-speed: British Design 1860-1960 at Sheffield Museums and  Art Galleries in1979, Eye for Industry: Retrospective of the Royal Designers’ at the V 7 A Museum in 1986, and ‘Anarchy and Beauty, William Morris and his Legacy’ at the National Portrait gallery in 2014.
