Circa 1950
A most interesting and highly unusual bespoke commissioned solid oak Blanket / Storage Box from Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson. By family repute it was commissioned in 1950, however the design is clearly much earlier and reflects the early domestic furniture designs Robert was experimenting with in the early 1900s. These designs themselves owed much to the inspiration Robert found in medieval architecture and furniture design.
Of tapered rectangular form with adzing all over, including the rear and insides of the side legs, with wrought iron hinged lid and a signature mouse in low relief carved to the front of the box. Carved detailing and wrought iron pinning to the sides and shaped detailing to the side feet.
Superb condition inside and out with a rich deep darker fumed colour.
An excellent piece for collectors.
