Circa 1930s
New in and market fresh from a private family collection, photographed as purchased and unloaded from our van.
A rare and exquisite early bespoke made solid oak Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson 4’6″ Table, used as a dining table by the same family owners from new but, given its proportions, could easily be used as a centre or side table. The single plank 2 1/2″ thick top is adzed to upper and lower sides, confirming its manufacture before Robert Thompson’s acquired a planing machine in the late 1930s. We’ve never seen this curved X frame leg design used on a table of this size before, although it is used to this day on a stool. The legs are immensly sturdy, carved from 3 ½” solid oak with a similar sized pegged stretcher joining the two legs. A beautifully carved early mouse signature sits prominantly on one curved leg.
It is a stunning statement piece, wonderfully looked after all its life, originally purchased by the former owners grandparents who lived close to Kilburn and knew Robert personally. Darker fumed from new it requires nothing more than a very gentle and sympathetic clean and re-wax. One of a number of early and later pieces privately purchased directly from the original owning family.
