Very rare to the market & highly sought after, understated Arts and Crafts furniture at its very best, in the Cotswold school style. Every piece is totally unique – SWD never produced the same design twice. Signed and dated in typical fashion by the
SWD master craftsman who made it – Ernest J Oldcorn.

Features twin folding top flaps which open to reveal 2 storage ledges, a large inner storage compartment & a removable wooden compartmentalized tray. Lower drawer with wooden handle and compartments, and an under shelf. Distinctive SWD exposed wedged
tennon joints on the sides, canted panels with typical chamfered or curved edges. Take a look at the underside of the drawer, a master class of the finest cabinet making skills. In wonderful condition in typical fumed, then linseed oiled and waxed finish.

SWD was the son of a wealthy mill owner in Darwin, Lancs. Oxford eductated, he was apprenticed to A. Romney Green before setting up business in Windermere, Cumbria in 1923. The business closed in 1960.

Ernest Oldcorn (1894-1968) was born in Kendal and learned his cabinet making skills at Simpsons of Kendal (he worked on the oak carving at Blackwell House) & Gillows of Lancaster, before joining SWD where he was the master carver and foreman until
he retired in 1959, shortly before the business closed.
