Circa 1934

A genuine and highly usable example of a 5′ Tall 6 Drawer Oak Chest from the Cumbrian Arts and Crafts furniture maker Arthur W Simpson of Kendal, and his son Hubert, who took over  the business from his father in 1922.  The design is typical of their later 20s and 30s work  and is a highly engineered piece of furniture. Each drawer section has its own full base secured to the framework, ensuring  both structural rigidity and considerable weight.  The drawers are all graduated and deep, ranging in depth from 14.8 to 22.6 cm, a look on the underside of the drawers confirms the use of the very finest cabinet making skills. Complemented by contrasting ebonised / dark stained wooden handles. Stamped to the rear with the the job/design number 9853, suggesting a manufacturing date of 1934, although collectors will know the marking system was not always consistent, if applied at all.

Lovely overall condition, although the right side panel  has suffered a heat shrinkage split, most likely caused by proximity to a heat source such as a radiator (shown in the image gallery below). The pricing below reflects this, however,  the usability and structural rigidity is not adversly affected in any way. Slight expected wear to the drawer handle finish.

Known to have been purchased originally by Annie Taylor of Crosthwaite, Nr Kendal. Passed to her sister Hilda on her death in 1942, coincidentaly Hubert Simpson’s neighbour, and hence by family descent, together with a number of other pieces of Simpson’s work we have acquired.
