Circa early 20th C
A genuine and highly usable example of a 3’6″ wide 4 Drawer Oak Chest from the renowned Cumbrian Arts and Crafts furniture maker Arthur W Simpson of Kendal. The design is typical of their early work and is a beautifully designed piece of furniture, constructed to the very highest standards. The finest quarter sawn oak has been selected and used on the drawer fronts, highlighting the superb meduallary ray graining patterns unique to this specific cut of oak. The piece also exhibits exposed tennons and the intricate carved detailing that Simpson became known for. Each drawer section has its own full base secured to the framework, ensuring both structural rigidity and addional weight. The drawers are all graduated and deep, still fitted with their original Rathbone arts and crafts handles and lock escutcheons. A look on the underside of the drawers confirms the use of the very finest cabinet making skills.
Gently cleaned and re-waxed it presents in superb condition.
