Stock ref: DS1602
Circa 1904 / 1930
An excellent and genuine oak Occasional Chair from the Kendal, Cumbria workshop of Arthur Simpson and his son Hubert. Wonderfully carved detailing to the chair back and complete with original hide seat, turned over the front and rear of the seat, secured with domed upholstery pins and backed on the underside with hessian. Stamped 9229 to the underside. This design is typical of their work in the early 20th Century so it is possible the piece could have been made at either the end of the first batch of 10,000 pieces made, or the second batch, as the same job/design numbers were repeated.
Excellent overall condition, no loose joints, the hide with a particularly fine colour and patina.
Known to have been purchased originally by Annie Taylor of Crosthwaite, Nr Kendal. Passed to her sister Hilda on her death in 1942, coincidentaly Hubert Simpson’s neighbour, and hence by family descent, together with a number of other pieces of Simpson’s work we have acquired.
