Circa 1960s/early 70s

Rare to find as they have always been  bespoke commission made, rarer still to find in such excellent condition. This is one of a pair that we have recently acquired.   The adzed table top is constructed from a 2″ thick single plank of heavily grained oak and is  3′ in length of concave rectangular form. A signature mouse is carved prominently to the middle edge of the table top.  It stands on 4 tapered octagonally carved legs  which are visibly jointed through the top of the table.  Cleaned and re-waxed in our workshop it presents in superb condition with a rich dark honey colour.

Circa 1930s/40s

A superb example of an early book trough by Robert Mouseman Thompson which is extensively adzed all over, including the rear side of the back rest. Over the years the adzing has been progessively reduced, now just the sides are adzed. It also features  what collectors will know is the rare upwards facing mouse which is rarely found on these book troughs as it is technically more difficult and time consuming to carve it this way against the wood grain. ( see p48  Mouseman: The Legacy of Robert Thompson of Kilburn.) Wonderful waxed deep rich chestnut colour with no losses to the mouse or evidence of previous repairs and only very minor usage marking from use as intended.

Size: 46(w) x 20.5(d) x 20.3(h)

Circa 1940s/50s

A lovely example of the much sought after earlier made Cheeseboard with the mouse carved onto the board instead of the handle. Production of this model ceased in about 1960 when the mouse carving was moved to the handle  in order to strengthen it as it which was prone to breakage. Clearly well used over the years with knife cuts and scrubbing marks and  but it now has a rich depth of colour  and aged patina. Adzed to the upper and lower surface. The mourse carving is excellent with just some evidence of rubbing to the tail from years of cleaning the board.

Circa 1940s

A wonderful example of a highly sought after, richly coloured and patinated  early dining set from Robert Mouseman Thompson, comprising a 5′  dining table  with two carver armchairs and four dining chairs.

The table features adzing to all parts including the underside table supports, legs, feet and stretchers and a large mouse is carved to one leg. The three plank top  is fox tongue dowel jointed with no joint splitting. Free from any significant staining just the expected light surface scratching associated with normal usage over the years.  Darker fumed from new after a clean and re-wax in our workshop it presents with  a superb rich  chestnut toned colour and aged patina.

The panel backed chairs are adzed all over including the rear and the bottom of the front legs have the ‘centre pop marks’, all as expected on chairs of this age. All the joints are tight and there are invoices from R. Thompson’s dated 1998 to confirm the chairs were re-foamed, leathered and the webbing tightened/replaced as required. The leather remains in excellent unmarked condition.
