Circa 1950s /early 60s

No longer made by Robert Thompson’s, excellent examples of these neatly proportioned four legged occasional / coffee tables are increasingly rare to the market, making them particularly sought after by Mouseman collectors. It features a quater sawn and adzed one piece top with rounded edges displaying superb golden medullary ray figuring, supported on four carved faceted baluster legs joined by stretchers. The table top is nail pinned to the supporting framework, like on the dish topped stool, and in line with early craftsmanship the legs, stetchers and top supports are also all subtly adzed on outer faces. A well carved trademark mouse is carved to one of the legs.

Privately acquired directly from the original owners family it  presents in a wonderful condition with a rich colour, the joints are solid and it is free from any staining or evidence of repairs, just a few very minor light suface scratches on the top commensurate with normal useage.

Circa early 1960s

A rare early bespoke made adzed extending dining table with 4 chairs by ‘Squirrelman’ Wilf Hutchinson, part of a suite of pieces all acquired from the same private estate.

In normal use the table is 4’5″ long, 2’11” wide  and features a cleated plank top. Below this, protected by a green baise lining to the underside of the top are two extension tables which can be used independently and slide out into place at either end, extending the maximum table length to 7’4″ when required. The top is supported by an apron which features an early squirrel carving and four turned, carved and adzed  baluster legs.  The legs sit on their original Shepherd castors which look to have been specified from new to aid manouevrability around the original purcasers home. Discussions with Trevor, Wilf’s son, confirm that the piece would cost considerably more to make than the standard refectory style table. Lovely condition, just one small minor natural wood split in the top which is shown in a photograph below, but is difficult to distinguish.

The chairs are in wonderful condition and beatifully patinated. Adzed all over, each with an early squirrel carved to the centre of the  seat apron. The  analine cow hide seating  is original  and in superb condition given it’s age and propensity to mark, testimony to 50+ years of careful ownership The under foams show some expected sagging from usage but  i personally feel it would be a shame to replace the hide and foam and lose the originality and patination that the original hides bestow to the chairs.

Size: Table – 135 to 224(l) x 88.5(w) x 76(h)cm
Size: Chairs – 40(w) x 40(d) x 85(h)cm, seat height 46cm.
