Circa 1930s/40s

A wonderful example of the highly sought after early Mouseman fruitbowl. Of characteristic early form having the mouse carved to the outside of the bowl and the bowl being deeper but of smaller diameter than the modern bowl design introduced about 1960.
The bowl presents with a superb depth of aged chestnut brown colour and patina and is free from any splits, losses or evidence of previous repair. Beatifully tooled to the inner bowl and adzed to the outside, with just a little inner bowl staining which
results from the friuit acids reacting with the tannins in the oak, all normal and expected on fruitbowls that have been used as intended over the years.

Size: 22.3(dia excl the mouse carving) x 7.8(h)

No longer produced by Robert Thompson’s, this ashtray features  the earlier larger bowl with narrower cigarette cut-out and an  exceptionally large high backed mouse, one of the highest i’ve seen carved onto an ashtray. These ashtrays typically
have an overall height including the mouse carving of between 3.5 and 4.0 cm, this piece is 4.5 cm in height.

Dark fumed from new it presents in a rich deep chestnut brown colour  and looks to be unused as an ashtray.

A wonderful Robert Thompson Mouseman combination barometer, thermometer, hygrometer. All the correct period West German instruments are in working order and feature brass surrounds, although  I have noticed the thermometer calibration is currently reading approximately  5° high. The surround is hand carved from a single block of quarter sawn oak which emphasises the distinctive medullary ray graining in the oak and a signature mouse is carved in high relief to the top right corner.
