An excellent Sid Burnard driftwood, wire and metal tap assembled  bird sculpture. Signed and dated  16.11.18 to the base

Provenance:  The Kate & Jon Catleugh Collection, 2021. A gift from the artist to Kate.

Kate (1931-2021) and Jon (1920-2009) were notable collectors at the heart of the British arts and crafts and contemporary craft scence from when they met in the 1960s until their respective deaths. Jon had a particular passion and interest in the arts and crafts movement becoming an acknowledged expert in William  De Morgan.  Kates personal tastes were more wide ranging and contemporary, but always of the highest quality of artisan craftsmanship whether the  material be wood, glass, pottery or metal.

Sid Burnard (born 1948) is an acclaimed beach combing artist, creating works of art, usually birds, boats or beasts, solely from the flotsam and jetsam he finds on his local home coastline in South Wales. Aside from skilfully cleaning and drying the sea washed timbers and other materials to ensure long term preservation nothing is cut or altered from its naturally found form, merely ‘assembled’ into a work of art, reflecting his own passion, integrity and humour.  The Goldmark Gallery in Oakham have featured several exhibitions of his work.

Circa late 1940s/early 50s

A beautifully patinated 5′ solid oak Sideboard from the ex Mouseman craftsman Sid Pollard of Bagby, Near Thirsk. Of typical rectangular form with rear upstand  and adzed all over in line with early Mouseman craftsmanship. Two panel doored cupboards with shelves to each side  and a bank of two short over three long drawers in the middle.  Exceptionally clean interior which looks to have been protected with lining paper.  The upper right drawer is lined and compartmentalised for cutlery. There’s a later added and removable lining in the left drawer too.  The top features natural burrs in the oak towards the right hand side and in line with very early work it is visibly nail pinned to the framwork.  Complimented by traditional wrought iron fittings to the doors and drawers.

Beautiful rich warm colour and patina, slight natural wood spliting and warpage shown in the images below… to be naturally expected with an aged piece.

Sid Pollard lived in Bagby, near Thirsk, and was one of Robert Thompson’s early apprentices, together with his brother. His solo work is almost always unmarked, preferring to let his craftsmanship speak for itself. After leaving Thompson’s he combined his solo work with the family building firm, Pollard Builders. His solo work dates from the  late 40’s through to his death in 1994.
