Circa early/mid 1980s

An exceptional early Bob ‘Wrenman’ Hunter 7 1/2″ bowl in pristine condition, privately acquired from the deceased estate of a local Yorkshire Critters collector. Only ever used as a display piece it features a large and exceptionally detailed wren carved
perching on a branch, placed centrally in the bowl. Compeletely free of any damage or staining it has  stunning graining, colour and patina. Bought new in the early 80’s not long after Bob established Wren Cabinetmakers together with a free standing
gated letter rack which i also own, it still has its original label to the underside which bears the pre 1995 telephone number for Bob’s home and workshop in Thirlby which nestles at the foot of Sutton Bank, near Thirsk, lening some  provenance
to the age of the piece.

My family are fortunate to know Bob  and his family, he is a wealth of interesting information for me on all matters relating to Robert Thompson and all the Yorkshire makers.  He started working as an apprentice at Thompson’s in 1948 whilst
Robert Thompson was still alive,  and is still working every day in what remains a close family business, now ably assisted by his son’s David and Gary and daughter Jackie, all skilled cabinet makers and wood carvers in their own right.

Circa 1950s / early 60s

Superbly presented rectangular coffee table from Sid Pollard, one of Robert Thompsons early craftsmen. Features a single plank adzed top supported by four inset octagonally carved and adzed legs on two dledge feet, joined by a stretcher at floor level.
Extensively adzed to all visible areas which reflets the light wonderfully. Clearly exceptionally well looked after it presents in excellent condition free from any staining or damage  other than slight natural  age related wood shrinkage where
the top is screwed into the underside supporting cross member. Wax finished in a  wonderful aged deep honey colour and patina.

Sid Pollard lived in Bagby near Thirsk and was one of Robert Thompson’s early apprentices. His solo work which dates from the 40s through to the 70s is almost always unmarked, preferring to let his recognisable craftsmanship speak for itself. He combined
his solo woodcraft work with work within the family building firm, Pollard Builders.

Circa 1960

A rare find, an older  Mouseman nests of tables in genuinly excellent original condition. More often than not heavy usage leads to  considerable staining and scratching particularly to the tops and lower legs which is impossible to remove fully
without destroying the natural colour and patina of the wood. Privately acquired locally, part of a deceased estate, it is known to have been in the same original ownership since about 1960.  Careful usage and regular waxing have ensured that there’s
a wonderful deep and consistent warm honey colour on all three tables and hardly any marking or staining anywhere on it, save for a little light splashing behind the front leg on the largest table. Mice are carved in high relief to the front right on
the two largest nests, to the left on the smallest table.
