Arts & Crafts subject. To the rear, beech boards secured with brass fixings secure the copper panels in place.
The copper panels are in a lovely patinated condition. The beech frame is generally excellent, with evidence of minor repair to the
feet sections and a back panel split which has been glued. It is also possible the screen extended even higher originally as there is evidence of circular wood filled holes in the top corner sections of each fold in the frame.

Circa late 20‘s / early 1930’s

Stunning quality desk or table of irregular rectangular form with a slightly concave front. The top is constructed from a rare and hugely impressive 3 inch thick single plank of solid oak, 51” wide and 22” deep. Single plank tables and desks
of such thickness and size have not been made by Thompson’s since the early 30’s. All edges are rounded and the top is adzed all over, including the sides and underside, confirming it’s early manufacture. It stands on 4 substantial
adzed, angled and slightly tapered octagonal legs. The wedged leg joints are exposed and protrude right through the top. The joints are tight with no shrinkage or movement. A typically early mouse is carved prominently to the front right leg.

The highly waxed rich chestnut colour tones and deep patination combine with the natural graining and burrs in the oak to produce a desk / table of immense character and charm. No damage , repair or restoration, very light marking and scratching commensurate
with normal usage and age.

Size: 130(w) x 56(d) x 73(h) cm

Please don’t confuse this table/desk with the range of former pub tables that were auctioned by Tennants in 2011 and are now being offered to market by a number of dealers at £1500 to £4000. These pub tables are multi planked, have much
thinner tops ( 1 1/4 to 1 1/2”), are not as early and don’t have through leg joints.

The colour, graining, patination and deeply waxed finish, on the top in particular, is simply stunning !
