Circa 1960s

An excellent example of Tom Whittaker’s traditional rustic craftsmanship, this traditional oak occasional / coffee  table features a circular adzed top with wonderfully detailed guilloche banding. The top supported on a carved  pedestal leg and four crossed feet. Tom’s distinctive gnome signature is carved to the lower section of the pedestal leg.

Excellent condition with tight leg joints and a rich deep colour, cleaned and re-waxed in our workshop.

Thomas whittaker (1910 -1991) lived and worked in York and later in Littlebeck, near Whitby, North Yorkshire. His trademark gnome is carved onto most of his post war work and was inspired by a German jewish refugee he met shortly before the outbreak of war who was judging a piece he had entered into the North of England Craftsmen’s Exhibition in Newcastle. He was asked to indenify the piece in some way and the judge suggested the ‘german oak spirit’  the legend being that a gnome is born each time an acorn germinates and will guard that tree throughout its life. His work is now highly regarded and nearly as well known as Robert Thompson’s. His business ceased on his death and his former home and workshop is now a private residence. For those interested in learning more about his life and work i attach a link to a British Pathe newsreel from 1961. Gnomeman Thomas Whittaker

A beautifully aged and patinated early Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson Dressing Stool, complete with its original leather hide stretched over the frame. The stool of rectangular form with  adzing all over, standing on four carved square and octagonally carved legs, an exceptional early mouse carving to the facet of one leg.

Excellent original condition, rich depth of aged colour.

The stool was part of a nun’s simply furnished room set comprising of a single bed, single wardrobe, dressing chest and…….. a stool. Robert Thompson’s archives for this commission indicate all the items were designed by Robert himself and that, out of respect for the nun’s, he was directly involved himself in making a large number of the pieces, together with his craftsmen.

Circa 1970s

An excellent  set of 6 Lattice Back Dining Chairs  from the renowned  early ex mouseman and ‘Yorkshire Critters’  craftsman Sid Pollard. Comprises 2 carver armchairs and 4 dining chairs, all with excellent original aniline leather upholstered seats.

Excellent overall condition, lighter medium fumed finish. One carver chair has some dog chewing damage to one of the side leg stretchers, as shown in the image gallery and has been reflected in the pricing. We can recommend an ex mouseman craftsman who can replace this stretcher  for the purchaser if necessary. The original aniline hide is in remarkable condition given the 40-50 year age of the chairs and it is clear the chairs have been used infrequently.

Sid Pollard’s work is unusual for an ex Mouseman and  Yorkshire Critters craftsman as it is  almost always unmarked, he preferred to let his craftsmanship speak for itself.

A matching 6′ table is also available, listed separately in case  clients are just looking for one or the other piece.
