Circa 1940s/50s

A beautifully coloured and grained example of the  earlier made solid oak rectangular  Serving Tray from the Kilburn workshop of Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson. Carved from a solid block of  the highest quality quarter sawn oak which is why the medullary ray graining patterns are displayed in all their glory on this piece, heightened by the light bouncing off the adzed surfaces.  Excellently carved mice form the handles with no losses.

The underside contains some filled holes where a previous owner looks to have attempted to fix some legs onto it in the past,  to use it as a small  side table ! Fortunately the holes are very slight and don’t come through the upper surface

Size: 52(w, incl mice handles) x 29.5(d) x 2.3(h)cm

1938

A bespoke commissioned Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson Oak Console / Side Table of rectangular form with a thick two plank adzed top and visible dowelled jointing, standing on four octagonally carved baluster legs with sledge feet, joined by a floor stretcher. Adzed all over with an excellent mouse carving to the front right leg.

Cleaned of ring stains on the top and wax polished in our workshop.

Excellent provenance: from the Horlicks Collection and recorded in the Robert Thompson ledger, 1938, Messers Horlick, Slough, 3 Occasional Tables at £ 5 each.

The Horlick family are famous for  creating and owning the famous malted milk drink ‘Horlicks’ manufactured at their large Slough factory, which has only  recently closed following the sale of the business by Glaxo Smith Klein.  The Robert Thompson ledgers  indicate that the family commissioned a significant number of pieces from 1930 through to 1939 to furnish their boardroom and other offices.

We have purchased 2 of the 3 tables that were  commissioned in 1938.
