Circa 1960s

An excellent and very rare example of the ex mouseman craftsman Bob Hunter’s early solo work when, for a period of time, he carved a tortoise onto his solo work. Today he is, of course, better known as the ‘Wrenman’, having carved a wren onto his work since the early 1980s. Prior to this he worked locally with Colin Almack at Beaver Furniture and Don Craven at Aldbrough Woodcrafts after leaving Robert Thompson’s  with them in the late 1950s, as well as producing a small number of pieces of his own.

The fruitbowl is large at 12 1/2″ diameter, it’s adzed/tooled  all over  with a thick outer rim, and has a wonderful darker fumed chestnut brown toned colour and patina. Typical of Bob, the attention to detail of his tortoise carving is exceptional. No losses and minimal staining and usage marks within the bowl.

It’s a very fine and rare piece for collectors of Mouseman and the Yorkshire Critters Craftsmen’s work, sourced locally.

William S. Mycock for Pilkington, an excellent sought after Royal Lancastrian Lustre Vase, twin handled squat baluster form, painted with daisies and a foliate arcade between ropetwist borders. Impressed marks and artists monogram to the base. Excellent condition with no evidence of faults or restorations.

Established by the Pilkington family in 1892 adjacent to the canal at Clifford Junction, Manchester. Initially known for its tile output the business expanded rapidly under the management of William Burton, formerly a chemist at J. Wedgewood’s. An ardent follower of the Arts & Crafts principles he recruited a formidable team of the leading designers, potters and artists around him. Experimentation with complex glazes led to the introduction in 1906 of what has become their most famous and desirable range, the high end Lancastrian Lustre Ware, named after the county of Lancashire, production of which continued until 1938. The company was granted a Royal warrant by King George V in 1913 and their wares were hence known as Pilkington’s Royal Lancastrian pottery.

Today it’s a number of their skilled artists who developed an international reputation whose work is most highly prized. Most notable amongst them are Gordon Forsyth, Richard Joyce, William S Mycock, Charles Cundall and Gwladys Rodgers, each marking their work with their own distinctive initials.

Circa 1950s

A excellent  pair of 3 branch oak Ceiling Chandeliers from the the workshop of Yorkshire Critters craftsman Robert ‘Kingpost’ Ingham. He traded  from Burton Leonard near Harrogate until the late 1950s, before retiring and selling  most of the assets of the business, including the design rights and his remaining stock, to Alan ‘Acornman’ Grainger when he founded Acorn Industries in 1957.

This is one of several Acornman and Kingpost ceiling chandeliers we have acquired privately from the original owners family which were purchased at various times, the earliest in the 1950s, through to  circa 1990.

They feature a 3 branch light fitting with arms connecting centrally to a hexagonal central hub with a signature carved kingpost roof beam to one facet.  A hexagonal central column rises, to which is fitted a wrought iron or brass hanging chain and octagonal oak ceiling rose.  The original old 2 strand wiring has been replaced with new modern 3 core wiring and new earthed brass fittings, and they are ready to connect and use.

These differ only very slightly from the later made acornman examples we also have for sale (DS1822-1, DS1822-2) in that the  wiring is laid in a channel on the top side of the branch arms.  One chain is plated brass, the other wrought iron.

Offered  individually or as a pair,  but can also be purchased together with any of the other Acornman examples. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Size: 52(dia) x 24 to 55(h)cm, max incl chains and ceiling rose.
