Circa late 40s – early 60s

A rare and exquisitely carved oak dish of maple leaf form from ex mouseman craftsman Martin Dutton, only the second of it’s type we have acquired over the years we have been in business. A wonderfully tactile piece to handle, the oak is beautifully contoured and tooled in traditional mouseman style to all visible surfaces,  with Martin’s distinctive Lizard carved prominently within the dish. Gently cleaned and re-waxed in our workshop to revive the rich brown  colour tones of the fumed oak. Wonderful condition for its age,  but we know our regular clients appreciate our honest descriptive appraisals so would point out very slight evidence of old chipping to one leaf tip and a very fine old professional glued repair along the wood grain, to the leaf tip where the lizard is carved. All are shown in the image gallery below.

Martin Dutton (1921-2009) of Huby, Nr York was a talented craftsman who trained and worked at Thompson’s through the war years. His solo work from the late 40s onwards bears  his distinctive Lizard carving. Martin, who was deaf from birth, later became the senior woodwork teacher at the  Yorkshire Residential School for the Deaf in Doncaster, the lizard carving later continued by his associate Yorkshire craftsman Derek Slater.

Circa late 1960s/early 70s

A superb example of a Sid Pollard leather seated oak stool. Four turned  carved legs are joined by stretchers, all sound and tight, the framework cleaned and re-waxed in our workshop.  Retains it’s original aniline cow hide held in place by brass upholstery studs, which  has a lovely patina and we’ve fed with an appropriate hide conditioner. As is typical of his work it is unmarked, he always preferred to let his craftsmanship speak for itself. Together with his elder brother he was one of Robert Thompson’s early trained craftsmen and his carving and carpentry skill is distinctive to those who know and appreciate his work.

Shown photographed next to a slightly larger Sid Pollard dressing stool of the same age and original ownership which we also have for sale (see DS1807)
