Circa  late 1940s/1950s

A superb early Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson Oak Cheeseboard, the mouse carved characteristically to the board. Post 1960 the mouse carving was moved onto the handle to strengthen it as the earlier handles were prone to snapping. Privately acquired from the original Teesside owners family it has only ever been used as a display piece, protected by varnish in more recent years. We’ve carefully removed the varnish and wax polished the piece to accentuate the grain and natural waxed colour of the aged oak wood. A wonderful carved mouse on the board with no losses, rare as they are often damaged, especially on boards that have been used as intended.

An excellent and rare to market oak ashtray from ex Mouseman craftsman Martin ‘Lizardman’ Dutton. No evidence of ash burn with a tooled upper surface and carved with his distinctive lizard. Medium fumed originally and now with a rich naturally aged and waxed colour and patina.

Martin Dutton (1921-2009) of Huby, Nr York was a talented craftsman who worked at Thompson’s  through the war years. His solo work from the late 40s onwards bears  his distinctive Lizard carving. Martin, who was deaf  from birth, later became the senior woodwork teacher at the  Yorkshire Residential School for the Deaf in Doncaster, the lizard carving later continued by his associate Yorkshire Critters craftsman Derek Slater.

A superb example of a Wilf Hutchinson ‘Squirrelman’ oak Ashtray. Excellent unused condition with a rich fumed colour.

As with the other ‘Yorkshire Critters’ craftsmen’s work it is much rarer to the market than the ‘Mouseman’ ashtray.

Wilf trained  and worked under Robert Thompson in the 1950s, leaving to set up his own business in nearby Husthwaite in 1957. He was joined there later by his son Trevor, who continues the business today.

A wonderful Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson 4’6″ Octagonal Dining Table with a 4 plank adzed top supported by a cruciform pedestal base, seating 4 in comfort and up to 8 on special occasions. A trademark mouse is carved in high relief to one of the pedestal supports. The worn and flaking original varnished top has been refurbished in our workshop and refinished in the more popular wax only finish and presents in a warm, golden medium fumed colour, free from stains, just a slight joint split to one edge caused by shrinkage / tightening of the wood over the years where the top is screwed to the under supports of the pedestal base (see image gallery below).

Circa 1920s

A vey unusual and bespoke made large carved oak  Fire Brush featuring a detailed carved grinning face, as occasionally seen on some early bespoke bookends and monks chairs. Unmarked, which was not unusual in the 1920s prior to the trademark registering of the mouse carving in 1931,  but originally from the Riddihough Estate, Farnhill hall, Skipton and believed to have been supplied by Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson in the 1920s when he furnished and panelled the dining room. A  near identical Fire Brush  from the same estate, albeit with a grimacing carved face, was sold by Hartleys, Ilkley in June 2016.

Excellent condition and a deep brown colour, with a  brass ring hanger to the rear.

A rare and unique piece for discerning mouseman collectors.
