Circa early 1930s

One of the earliest examples of these comfortable Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson Smokers Armchairs as evidenced by the  lower height, adzed all over oak chair frame, low set front stretcher and webbed leather seat base with wrought iron support bar. The chair retains it’s original slung aniline cowhide seat back and has a later Robert Thompson’s replacement aniline cow hide seat cushion, as  it’s almost unheard of for the original cowhide seat cushions, filled with horsehair, to have survived the  rigours of 80+ years of regular use.

All the dowelled joints are solid and the framework presents with a superb deep rich colour and patina following a symapthetic clean and wax polish.  The aniline cowhide seat back and base have been conditioned  and fed with appropriate conditioners and present in wonderful condition and patina.

See page 47 of the book: Mouseman, The legacy of Robert Thompson of Kilburn, for an image and further details of these early made chairs.

Excellent provenance, made for the  Order of the Holy Paraclete, St Hilda’s Priory, Whitby.

Circa 1950s/early 60s

A very rare and unusual ‘Rabbitman’ Horseshoe Pin Dish, an early example of Stan Dodds’ solo work, made whilst he was still working full-time at Robert Thompson’s,  and before Peter Heap later trademark protected the rabbit as his own carved signature.  The Pin Dish features a gilt horseshoe and a delightful carved rabbit which is distinct from that Peter Heap  later carved, particularly around the face and ears. It presents in excellent condition with slight age related edge wear to the gilding on the horseshoe.

Excellent provenance, having come from the estate of Patricia Kirk of Kilburn, the Kirk family being long established farmers and butchers in Kilburn and neighbours of Robert Thompson.

Other pieces available from her estate include a ‘Mouseman’ Workbox presented by her parents as a 21st birthday gift in 1948 and a  ‘Mouseman’ Cheeseboard.

Circa 1940s

A superb early Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson Oak Cheeseboard, the mouse carved characteristically to the board. Post 1960 the mouse carving was moved onto the handle to strengthen it as the earlier handles were prone to snapping. Dark fumed from new and in excellent condition following many years of wrapped storage in the attic, a clear wax polishing has really accentuated the  wavy graining and deep nutty brown colour of the oak. No evidence of knife cut marks to the upper board surface.

Circa  1950s/60s

An exceptional pair of  the highly sought after Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson Squirrel Carved Bookends. They can have been made by a number of different craftsmen, but this particular pair have been very finely carved by master craftsman Stan Dodds whose  very distinctive mice are running along the top edge of the bookends. Only ever produced in very small numbers over the years and to bespoke commission this pair presents in exceptional condition, which is rare, the finely carved squirrel’s ears are very prone to breakage. Medium fumed from new  we’ve clear wax polished them and they present with a wonderful naturally aged rich medium oak colour.

Great care is needed when cleaning due to the prominent and finely carved ears, our top tip is to wax them with clear liquid Liberon wax, applied with an artists brush. Leave to dry for at least several hours before very carefully  buffing with a cloth or soft bristled waxing brush.

A superb collectors piece.
