Circa 1930s

A beautiful aged and richly coloured and patinated early breadboard from the Kilburn workshops of Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson. Whilst of the same overall size as currently made breadboard the early made examples feature adzing to both top and underside, a  considerably larger upper board surface area and are carved from a thicker block of solid oak. Lovely  detailed early mouse carving to one faceted edge. Used as a display piece for most of its life there is very little marking to the board itself and just a small minor chip loss where the lower corner section has rubbed against it’s display stand.

A superb example of a very early Mouseman Book Trough, extensively adzed to all surfaces including the undersides and rear with metal pinned sides, as only seen on the very earliest examples. Presents in excellent condition with a wonderful patina  and rich chestnut brown colour tones.  It also features an upwards facing carved  mouse which is rarer to find on these book troughs as they are harder to carve against the grain.

Circa late 1950s / early 60s

A rare, early and highly unusual Cheeseboard from former mouseman craftsman Wilf ‘Squirrelman’ Hutchinson of Husthwaite, near Thirk. Carved from a solid block of 2 1/2 inch oak it features unusual twin carved squirrels carved directly onto the board and a very high arched handle. The  Cheeseboard presents with a wonderful waxed and naturally aged oak patina and the knife marks on the board evidence usage as intended. Not surprisingly there are also minor old nibbles to the fragile ears of the carved squirrels which can be seen in the image gallery below.

Trevor Hutchinson, Wilf’s son who now runs Squirrel Furniture has seen the piece and confirms it’s rarity and early manufacture. Certainly we’ve only seen one previously which we didn’t buy as the board and carvings were in poor condition and badly worn.
