A superb example of a rare early burr oak Double Dished Stool from  the Robert Mouseman Thompson workshops, also known as a Fireside Duet Stool in early price lists. Of rectangular form with adzing all over, standing on four octagonally carved legs  with a signature mouse carved in high relief to one leg, joined by stretchers. The dished top features one of the best and most heavily burred oak tops we’ve seen on any mouseman piece. It would have been extremely difficult and time consuming to make such a large section of burr oak pliable enough to  form the dished shape without breaking.

The stool presents in excellent condition with tight joints and wonderful natural aged colour and patina, although the  burr oak top  has some of the normal expected age related cracking which is shown in the image gallery below.

Circa 1980

A superb example of the rare and highly sought after Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson Cock Pheasant, carved in a running pose from a single block of oak, in limited numbers and to special order, by their renowned master carver Stan Dodds. Beautifully observed and exceptionally well carved each one is known to have taken in excess of 80 hours of continual work  for Stan to produce. Numbered and baize lined to the base, although we can’t determine the number without removing the glued lining. Stan’s signature mouse carving is neatly integrated into the foliage on the rear of the carving.

Lovely medium oak colour, in perfect condition with no losses.

Stan Dodds worked at Robert Thompson’s from 14 years of age in 1942  up to retirement in 1994, taking over the role of master carver from George Weightman  in the 1960s. An example of the carved pheasant  is now on show at the Cheltenham Museum. Stan himself clearly thought very highly of these pheasant carvings as in retirement he went on to produce about 10 of them with his own woodpecker carved signature as well as undertaking regular part-time carving work for Wilf and Trevor at Squirrel Furniture. He sadly passed away in early 2012.

An excellent privately acquired oak Writing Bureau / Cupboard, which although unusually unmarked, is recalled as having been made by Colin ‘Beaverman’ Almack, when based in Thirsk for the original owners. Their son and daughter still vividly recall using it to complete their homework in the 1970s. We are also aware of an almost identical but slightly later made piece  being sold by Tennants Auctioneers, Leyburn, so are confident in the attribution to Colin Almack.  Adzed to all visible surfaces with a   panelled fall front upper section which opens to reveal a leather inlaid writing desk and shelved interior. Below is a multi panelled twin door cupboard, with a central fixed shelf within. Excellent waxed condition and  rich colour, the interior clean with minimal light usage marks. The key for the lock fitted to the upper section has unfortunately been lost, but new replacement locks/keys are widely avilable should purchasers wish to be able to lock the upper section.
