An excellent example of an early three legged cow stool with wonderful burr figuring to the 2″ thick seat, standing on three thick splayed and tapered octagonally carved legs. Signature mouse carving to one leg as was usual on these very early stools. Adzed and tooled to the whole piece, including the underside, which again was usual before Robert Thompson purchased a planing machine in the late 1930s.

Beautiful rich colour and patina. Covered in non original thick varnish on acquisition, this has been sympathetically removed and the stool re-polished with wax in our workshop.

Circa 1930s/40s

An excellent example of a comfortable early Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson solid oak smoking chair with a slung thick hide seat back and lattice woven leather seat base. Adzed framework with an early incised mouse carving to one lower side rail. It would originally have had a fabric seat cushion but this would have deteriorated some years ago and a new one is needed. The more modern made examples now feature a leather cushion pad and are of different dimensions.

Believed to have been extensively restored in 2007 and fitted with new leather at Robert Thompson’s Craftsmen Ltd, although we have no paperwork to confirm this. However, we’ve seen enough of these pieces over the years to know the work has been undertaken by them.

Excellent solid frame which we have cleaned and wax polished. The leather seat and back have also been cleaned and conditioned by us and are now developing a lovely deeper colour and patina, without the dark grease/oil staining so often found on the aniline hides used.

Circa 1970s/80s

A highly sought after Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson carved oak Yorkshire rose wall plaque, carved by their renowned master carver Stan Dodds.

Beautifully carved in relief with his quite distinctive mouse carving (when you know what distinguishing features to look for!)

Medium fumed and clear waxed, it presents in immaculate condition with no evidence of any stains, chips or other losses.

Stan worked at Robert Thompson’s from 1942 until retirement in 1994, but continued to produce items with his own woodpecker signature in his home workshop, and for other makers most notably Wilf and Trevor Hutchinson at Squirrel Furniture up until his death. We recently had a woodpecker signed yorkshire rose plaque, complete with the original traced design by Stan. Sadly it was stolen from our locked showroom display cabinet in August and has not been recovered by the police.
