Circa 1960s

An opportunity to own a rare bespoke commissioned occasional side or small tavern table with a cast iron base from the renowned Kilburn workshop of Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson. Features a flat planed, burr oak grained , 4.5cm thick irregular kidney shaped top with rounded edges and a signature mouse carved prominently to the edge. It’s supported on a specially commissioned and very heavy cast iron pedestal base with three frieze moulded feet.

Excellent condition and colour following a sympathetic restoration and refinish.

By repute, the table originates from The Feathers, Helmsley and subsequent research we’ve undertaken would support this. Opened as a hotel in 1959, the original owners Jack & Peggy Feather developed the neighbouring empty property into a bar in 1963 and commissioned Robert Thompson’s to provide the bar fixtures and fittings. At least two larger circular dining tables on cast iron legs remain in use there to this day. This table is believed to have been a small tavern table for use in a cozy corner with several cow stools around it.

A really unusual statement piece. We think it would make a fantastic lamp or side table. It’s unlikely you’ll ever see another…. except maybe at The Feathers ! David will take a look, and probably have a drink, next time he’s passing through Helmsley.

A superb example of the earlier made solid oak book trough from Robert Thompson the ‘Mouseman’ of Kilburn, North Yorkshire. Adzed sides, book ledge and rear in line with earlier manufacturing practice, as over the subsequent decades, there has been less adzing on these popular pieces. Excellent signature ,ouse carved to one side edge.

Presents in superb condition after we’ve stripped off a layer of varnish applied by a previous owner which, whilst preserving the piece from staining, was doing nothing for its aesthetic appeal. Now carefully cleaned and re-waxed it presents beautifully in a lovely warm aged medium fumed colour.

Circa 1970s-90s

A rare Stan Dodds ‘Woodpeckerman’ carved oak Yorkshire rose, an excellent example of Stan’s solo work, made in his own small workshop at home whilst he was still working full-time at Robert Thompson’s.

Beautifully carved in relief with his later signature woodpecker (he previously carved a rabbit until Peter Heap formally adopted it in 1970) carved to the  rear.

Medium fumed and clear waxed, it presents in immaculate unused condition having been stored at his home.

Provenance: from Stan Dodds’ estate, complete with the original traced drawing for the design by Stan.

Size: 15.5(dia) x 2(d)cm

Stan Dodds (1928-2012) worked at Robert Thompson’s from 14 years of age in 1942  up to retirement in 1994, taking over the role of master carver from his mentor George Weightman  in the 1960s, and responsible for most of their best carvings  in recent decades. His unique skill and craftsmanship is increasingly being recognised by collectors who seek out his distinctive mouse signature, as well as his own rabbit and later woodpecker signature. In retirement he undertook regular part-time carving work for a number of the Yorkshire Critters craftsmen, most notably Wilf and Trevor at Squirrel Furniture.

Stan married his wife Norma in 1960. Norma was the niece of Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson’s granddaughter-in-law. The newly married couple were given the use of a Thompson’s owned  house in nearby Osgodby. Here Stan set up his own small workshop ‘out the back’  where he made fine carvings in his spare time. The carvings that Stan produced under his own name with either a rabbit or woodpecker signature, both during his years at Kilburn and after his retirement, are particularly fine. The level of detail and refinement in Stan’s carving is testament to his skill and deep understanding of wood. Today, he and  George Weightman are regarded as Robert Thompson’s best ever carvers, their work appreciated by avid collectors of Mouseman around the world, whether produced for Robert Thompson’s or in their own spare time for personal use or resale.
