Circa 2000s

A beautiful densely burred elm 12 ½” diameter fruitbowl by the Yorkshire School craftsman K Lockwood. Lathe turned inside and out with KL initials to the base.

Excellent condition and colour except for a small hairline to the rim which in not unusual in such densely burred wood which we’ve shown in the image gallery below.

Sadly we currently know very little about this craftsman whose work is only now starting to appear on the market, some of it adzed and either signed with his initials KL or with an otter signature. The quality of adzing and carving suggests they have trained at R Thompson’s or one of the other larger workshops. Any further background details would be gratefully received.

1937

A beautiful walnut Mirror from the Windermere, Cumbria workshop of Stanley Webb Davies, the renowned Cotswold School trained Arts and Crafts furniture maker. Stanley Webb Davies pieces are always rare to the market and increasingly highly sought after, representing understated Arts and Crafts furniture at its very best, in the Cotswold School style of Gimson, Romney Green and the Barnsley’s. Displaying the very finest cabinet making techniques and skills combined with meticulous attention to the smallest details with typical alternating thumb nail carving and pinned bridle joints around the corners.

SWD signed and dated 1937 in the expected manner to the rear, the craftsmans signature is a little faded but looks to be either  Frank Crossfield or Frank Gregory both of whom were working with Stanley in 1937.

Excellent waxed condition, ready to hang and use.

Size: 45.7(w) x 81.3(h)cm / 18″ x 32″ ins.
