Circa 1960s

An excellent and very rare example of the ex mouseman craftsman Bob Hunter’s early solo work when, for a period of time, he carved a tortoise onto his solo work. Today he is, of course, better known as the ‘Wrenman’, having carved a wren onto his work since the early 1980s. Prior to this he worked locally with Colin Almack at Beaver Furniture and Don Craven at Aldbrough Woodcrafts after leaving Robert Thompson’s  with them in the late 1950s, as well as producing a small number of pieces of his own.

The fruitbowl is large at 12 1/2″ diameter, it’s adzed/tooled  all over  with a thick outer rim, and has a wonderful darker fumed chestnut brown toned colour and patina. Typical of Bob, the attention to detail of his tortoise carving is exceptional. No losses and minimal staining and usage marks within the bowl.

It’s a very fine and rare piece for collectors of Mouseman and the Yorkshire Critters Craftsmen’s work, sourced locally.
