Stock ref: DS1379
1981
A rare adzed spinning stool made by ‘Gnomeman’ Thomas Whittaker trained craftsman Chris Checksfield to celebrate the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. Of typical adzed and pegged form standing on three legs, the back
carved with The Prince of Wales feathers surrounded by both their names, hearts and the year of their wedding. It presents in excellent condition with a deep honey colour.
It’s no surprise the design and construction bears many similarities to the Thomas ‘Gnomeman’ Whittaker design, Chris joined Tom as his only apprentice on leaving school and worked with him for many years before setting up on his own, carving his
characteristic long necked cat onto his own work. His work is rare to the market, this is the first piece i’ve purchased in the last five years. As well as appealing to Yorkshire Oak buyers, this piece will no doubt also appeal to collectors of royal
memorabilia.
Size: 45(w) x 46(d) x 99(h)cm, seat height is 37cm.
