Stock ref: DS1344
Circa 1980s
Superb ‘Kingfisher’ carved Yorkshire oak cow stool. The octagonal top features a Yorkshire rose carved centrally, typical exposed and wedged leg joints through the seat and scalloped lower edge. The three curved legs are extensively adzed
and a kingfisher is carved in high relief to one leg. Lovely honey colour, free from any stains or damage.
The identity of this carver remains uncertain, often incorrectly attributed to the former Thompson’s master carver Stan Dodd’s who carved a very similar Woodpecker on personal work, however it is thought most likely to be the work of Herbert Bird
of York, although little is known about him. If anyone can confirm his identity or has any information about Herbert we would be delighted to hear form them.
Size: 26.5(seat dia) x 34(h)cm. Max leg width 33cm.
