Circa 1960s
An opportunity to own a rare bespoke commissioned occasional side or small tavern table with a cast iron base from the renowned Kilburn workshop of Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson. Features a flat planed, burr oak grained , 4.5cm thick irregular kidney shaped top with rounded edges and a signature mouse carved prominently to the edge. It’s supported on a specially commissioned and very heavy cast iron pedestal base with three frieze moulded feet.
Excellent condition and colour following a sympathetic restoration and refinish.
By repute, the table originates from The Feathers, Helmsley and subsequent research we’ve undertaken would support this. Opened as a hotel in 1959, the original owners Jack & Peggy Feather developed the neighbouring empty property into a bar in 1963 and commissioned Robert Thompson’s to provide the bar fixtures and fittings. At least two larger circular dining tables on cast iron legs remain in use there to this day. This table is believed to have been a small tavern table for use in a cozy corner with several cow stools around it.
A really unusual statement piece. We think it would make a fantastic lamp or side table. It’s unlikely you’ll ever see another…. except maybe at The Feathers ! David will take a look, and probably have a drink, next time he’s passing through Helmsley.
