Circa 1920 -1936

An excellent high quality walnut Standard lamp from the renowned ‘Cotswold School’ Arts and Crafts maker Peter Waals. Features an octagonal curved and stepped base,  standing on eight shaped feet with a central inset lead plate. The rising central octagonal stem tapers to a carved and detailed octagonally carved bulb holding plate. Beatiful condition, re-waxed and re-wired with new 3 core period style braided lighting flex which complies with current electrical safety standards.

Excellent provenance: from Mrs Crowther, nee Goddard (daughter of Josepth Goddard), and hence by family decent. The Goddard family of Leicester where chemists who patented mercury free silver and brass polishes, building a large business whose brand name is still synonymous with metal polishes today. They were big supporters of the Arts and Crafts movement and where major clients of Ernest Gimson. Peter Waals ( 1870-1937) was Gimson’s foreman and master cabinet maker before setting up on his own in Chalford, Gloucestershire following Gimson’s death in 1919. In the period 1920-1936 he produced furniture for many of the leading industrial families including the Pilkington’s and Cadbury’s earning a reputation for designing and producing furniture of the highest quality which is still keenly sought after.
