1970 / 71

WOW…. a simply stunning bespoke commissioned one-off Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson Carved Oak Phoenix, carved by Stan Dodd’s, complete with original correspondence to and from Robert Thompson’s and original invoice. Ordered June 1970, finished and invoiced in November 1971. Beautifully observed, the phoenix with curved outstretched wings is rising from a flaming nest,  Stan’s signature mouse  running through the flames on top of the nest.

It’s never previously been offered to the market, with a wonderful back story as to why it was commissioned.  The original owners property was called Phoenix Cottage, having been re-named as such as it had been rebuilt  having been badly damaged by a V1 rocket in WW2. The carving, and an earlier 1950s made hall /console table, were later bequethed to their friends and next door neighbours, from whom we have purchased both pieces privately. Dry stored in recent years it was very dry and dusty, but fully intact with no damage or repairs, just the expected wear to the baize lining on the base from being out on display at Phoenix Cottage.  Following a sympathetic clean and a clear re-wax it now presents in immaculate condition.

It has everything  a serious Mouseman carving collector could want…. it’s genuinely a one-off bespoke piece, full provenance, immaculate condition, carved by Stan Dodds.
