Circa early 1930s

An excellent example of the rare solid oak early Recling  Reading Chair by Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson. Rarer still, with two craftsmen’s mice carved to  the lower front leading edge and side arm. Original interwoven leather strapping to the base. The framework and joints remain solid, the piece displaying superb dark fumed colour and patina. As is usual on these chairs  the original seat and back cushions have long since perished, leaving purchasers the option to replace with new leather or fabric cushions of their own choice and budget.

Excellent provenance, commissioned for renowned Birmingham artchitect Samual  Nathaniel Cooke  (1882-1964) of S.N. Cooke & Partners. Bought from the company in 1971 by senior partner Locksley Hare on his retirement from the practice, together with some other impressive bespoke Mouseman pieces we’ve seen, and hence by family decent until our recent purchase directly from the family.
