Circa 1930s/early 40s
A superb statement piece of early ‘Mouseman’ furniture bespoke commissioned for a close family relative, a solid english oak mirror backed Hall Settle & Coat Stand from the Kilburn workshops of Robert Thompson. It’s a striking and imposing piece, standing 6’6″ tall and 3’10” wide and will look fabulous in a hall way or country kitchen. Features a signature penny moulded top above an adzed panelled back inset with a mirror and 6 hat / coat pegs, surrounded by arts and crafts chip carved detailing. The seat base with two open stick / umbrella holders, a lift up seat with compartments inside and a panelled front and sides, standing on octagonally carved feet. A trademark mouse carved beautifully in high relief to the front upright.
Superb condition, cleaned of minor paint spashing and re-waxed with deep chestnut brown darker fumed colour tones.
Previously sold by us in 2018, we are delighted to have been able to buy it back privately from a leading Mouseman collector.
Provenance: commissioned for Percy Cartwright’s sister & hence by family/relative decent. Percy Cartwright (1900-1988) married Robert Thompson’s only child, Elsie (1906-1994), their children and grandchildren in turn taking over the family business which continues today.
