Circa mid/late 1930s
An excellent early bespoke commissioned Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson Oak Monk’s Chair, the adzed curved back rail with a carved monk’s head on either side. The central splat with a carved initial ‘D’ for Dickinson, the surname of the original owner. the side splats with tightly woven lattice carving. The thick leather hide seat is original, wrapping over the framework. The chair is supported on four tooled and octagonally carved legs with a crossed stretcher with an excellent early mouse carved to one front leg.
Darker fumed from new, it presents in excellent original rich dark fumed and waxed colour and patina with solid joints and thick original leather in very usable condition. We have sympathetically cleaned and conditioned the leather hide.
Wonderfully looked after all its life, originally commissioned by Dr. W.H. Dickinson a renowned physician in Newcastle and subsequently passed onto his direct descendants, from whom it has been privately purchased.
