Circa 1960
A superb vintage example of a Robert Mouseman Thompson Monks Chair, first made for Ampleforth College in the 1920s and an iconic and popular item in Robert Thompson’s portfolio to this day. Monks Chairs are large and comfortable with a large curved back with shaped arms supporting, cow hide leather seat, carved lattice panels and four carved octagonal legs joined by a cross stretcher.
It presents in a excellent condition following a gentle clean and re-wax in our workshop with adzed legs, solid joints all round and no losses. It retains its original cow hide seat, which, considering it’s age has remarkably little staining and wear, the whole piece presenting with a rich naturally aged colour and patina.
