A unique opportunity to own a pair of early bespoke commissioned carved oak Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson African Elephant Bookends, believed to have been commissioned by John Weston Adamson, who had a keen interest in African wildlife,  whilst he was living at Oldstead Hall, near  to the Kilburn  workshop in N. Yorkshire.

Most likely carved by George Weightman their Master Carver at this time who is noted for his naturalistic carving ability and was regarded by Robert Thompson ‘as the son he never had’. Each carved from a solid block of oak they are superbly observed and intricately carved and tooled, displaying a wonderful sense of strength and purpose in their pose.

Gently cleaned and re-waxed in our workshop they present in a superb darker fumed richly patinated and coloured condition with no losses, just the usual minor natural hairline wood splits expected in pieces this age.
