A superb example of a rare early burr oak Double Dished Stool from  the Robert Mouseman Thompson workshops, also known as a Fireside Duet Stool in early price lists. Of rectangular form with adzing all over, standing on four octagonally carved legs  with a signature mouse carved in high relief to one leg, joined by stretchers. The dished top features one of the best and most heavily burred oak tops we’ve seen on any mouseman piece. It would have been extremely difficult and time consuming to make such a large section of burr oak pliable enough to  form the dished shape without breaking.

The stool presents in excellent condition with tight joints and wonderful natural aged colour and patina, although the  burr oak top  has some of the normal expected age related cracking which is shown in the image gallery below.

Excellent provenance, privately acquired directly from the  surviving family of the former timber merchants and oak supplier in the pre and post war period to Robert Thompson, together with a professional house contents insurance valuation dated 1943, confirming the early age of this and other bedroom furniture pieces we have purchased  from this estate.
