Circa 1960s/70s

An unusual  and very rare to the domestic market pair of 10 3/4″ solid oak Robert Mouseman Thompson collection plates of shallow dished form with rolled and carved upper edges and original lined centres. Trademark carved mice are incised to the base of each plate. Wonderful original condition each formed from a single block of quarter sawn oak and displaying the distinctive medullary ray graining only found on these  prized cuts of oak.

Saved from being consigned to a rubbish skip, these two plates have come to market following the recent closure  and disposal of all the remaining assets of Malsis School. The prep school in Cross Hills, near Skipton, closed its doors for the final time  at the end of the Autumn term in December 2014 after the failure of a proposed merger with Giggleswick School. The main school building was a Grade II listed former country house situated within a 32 acre estate, converted into the school in 1920. It’s thought these plates were for use in the school’s chapel and assembly hall. If any former pupils recall the plates and have any further details we would be delighted to hear from them.

Both plates present in excellent condition and honey colour with some  expected minor fraying and fading to the original green linings, entirely commensurate with their age and normal usage.  One plate has a very minor hairline along the grain, shown in the image gallery below.
