1936
New in and market fresh from a private family collection, photographed as purchased and unloaded from our van.
An excellent early bespoke commissioned Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson Oak Monk’s Chair, the curved back rail with a carved monks head on either side. The central splat with a carved shield dated 1936 and E.S initials, the side splats with tudor rose flower heads. The thick leather hide seat is original, wrapping over the side frames. The chair is supported on four legs with a crossed stretcher with an excellent early mouse carved to one front leg.
Darker fumed from new it presents in excellent rich colour and patina with solid joints and original leather in very usable condition.
Wonderfully looked after all its life, originally purchased by the former owners grandparents who lived close to Kilburn and knew Robert personally. It requires nothing more than a very gentle and sympathetic clean and re-wax to the frame and a re-condition of the leather. One of two monks chairs and a number of other early and later pieces privately purchased directly from the original owning family.
