Stock ref: DS2460
Circa 1940s / 50s
An excellent solid oak Table Lamp from the Windermere, Cumbria workshop of Stanley Webb Davies, the renowned Cotswold School trained Arts and Crafts furniture maker. Stanley Webb Davies pieces are rare to the market and increasingly highly sought after, representing understated Arts and Crafts furniture at its very best, in the Cotswold School style of Gimson, Romney Green and the Barnsley’s, and displaying the very finest cabinet making techniques and skills combined with meticulous attention to the smallest details.
Features an octagonally carved and shaped base with attractive petal forms and an octagonal centre stem with multiple carved and tapering facets and an ebony top ring collar. Wonderful rich colour following a gentle sympathetic clean and re-wax in our workshop. All new electrical fittings including an antique brass bulb holder, 3 core earthed period braided wiring and 3 amp fused plug, to ensure compliance with modern electrical safety standards. The only minor fault we can see is a hairline wood split in the top of the ebony collar where it looks as though the earlier plastic light fitting had been overtightened on it’s brass threaded insert into the wood.
Not visibly signed / dated, although this may well be hidden under the original lining on the base.
Excellent provenance, purchased directly from the original owners local family estate, together with other SWD pieces all dated 1940s or 50s.
The second of a matching pair. (See also DS2457)
