1957

A superb solid oak fabric upholstered Low Armchair from the Windermere, Cumbria workshop of Stanley Webb Davies, the renowned Cotswold School trained Arts and Crafts furniture maker. Stanley Webb Davies pieces are rare to the market and increasingly highly sought after, representing understated Arts and Crafts furniture at its very best, in the Cotswold School style of Gimson, Romney Green and the Barnsley’s. Every piece is totally unique, SWD was resolute in never producing exactly the same design twice. Displaying the very finest cabinet making techniques and skills combined with meticulous attention to the smallest details. Signed and dated in the expected SWD manner, made by Sydney A. Johnston  and Ernest J Oldorn.

Stunning golden oak colour  and in excellent condition following a gentle clean and re-wax in our workshop.  The fabric upholstery is also original and in superb condition.

Excellent provenance, from the Stanley Webb Davies Personal Collection 2019. This particular piece would have been residual showroom stock remaining, that Stanley retained himself at his Gatesbield home, when he closed his business in 1960. As with all his personal family possessions it was inherited by his niece and it is from her estate that this collection has come to market. It is complimented by an official image of the chair design from the SWD archive, written on the reverse by Stanley for design registration purposes, together with examples of original letter headed paper and  a showrroom item tag.

Size: 57(w) x 66(d) x 88(h)cm, seat height 34cm.
